National CALD Training for Health Professionals Working with Refugees and Migrants Capacity Building in Workforce Development Across New Zealand

National training in cultural competencies is rolling out across New Zealand. The CALD (Cultural and Linguistic Diversity) training programme is a joint venture initiative between RASNZ and the Asian Health Services of the Waitemata District Health Board. The programme, funded by Te Pou, provides training and clinical supervision for health professionals working in the mainstream services in how to work more effectively with refugees and migrants. So far District Health Boards in Auckland, Hamilton and Palmerston North have put more than 80 diverse health professionals through the course. The next course is soon starting in Christchurch. The course provides for training in how to work with interpreters, how to understand and relate with people for other cultures and specialist provision of care to traumatised refugees. Evaluation results show highly positive feedback from course participants. This is followed up in a unique and pioneering approach utilising case review and supervision via remote teleconferencing technology.
